Before You Read the Book...

2. What do you know about the Holocaust and WWII?

3. What a re some symbols that we use in today's society? What are they used for? What do they mean?

Section 1

1. Write a one paragraph summary of the major events that happened in these four chapters.

2. List three ways in which the Nazi occupation changed the lives of the citizens of Copenhagen.

3. Have you ever had a friend that had a different religion or nationality from you? How were you alike? How were you different?

Section 2

This story takes place in Denmark during WWII when it was occupied by Germany. What do you think it would be like to live under these circumstances? What could you do or not do? What things would you not be able to have? How would you feel?

Section 3

What sort of items do you think Annemarie's family might take with them if they were the ones who had to flee in the middle of the night?

Section 4

1. Describe Annemarie's encounter with the German soldiers. Tell about their attitudes and actions, and Annemarie's reaction.

2. Perdict what you think will happen next. Tell where you think the Rosens are. Remember it's more important to be logical than absolutely correct.

Section 5

Write one paragraph telling how much of this story is true and how much is fiction. Be sure to include the characters, the war, the dogs, the handkerchief, and the King of Denmark.
